Hi Rod,
I'm so glad that you noticed something that we've tried to point out for years! :-)
(You can read the 'About Us' section on Trustpilot in the right-hand column to see our take on it.)
The reason that there are only 1 and 5 stars is because all of the 1 star reviews are reviews from our client's customers, who had a bad experience with one of our thousands of clients - not us, and then wrote a bad review about us because we collect reviews for them - even though all of our client's reviews are verified and from actual real customers and 100% transparent.
Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do about these, because Trustpilot is an open review platform and lets anyone say anything they want without any verification or validation. But even though these client's customers leave us a 1 star, we still do our best to help them - even though their shopping experience has nothing to do with us.
Alternatively, all of the 5 star reviews are from our clients, who actually use our services. These are genuine experiences - we don't incentivize them in any way to leave a review.
So, there you have it. A very strange dicotomy of 1 and 5 star reviews - all left on an open review platform that we never asked to be a part of. Who knows if any of them are real? (Okay, I'm being a bit facetious, but still, it really annoys me as the owner of one of the largest verified review platforms in the world, that anyone can say what they want on Trustpilot, and I can't verify if they're a real customer or not. How is that fair?)
That's the risk of trusting an open review platform like Trustpilot. You have no idea if anything is real, and if someone disparages your company, you have very little, if any recourse - even if they're not your customer.
This is why we only collect actual verified reviews from people that buy our client's products and services, because that's the only way you can know for certain that the reviews are real.
So Rod, I hope that clarifies things, so you and hopefully many others who read this will better understand, that what you see on open review platforms is not a real, true reflection of a companies online reputation. Open review platforms are basically for all intents and purposes, glorified complaint boards masked as review platforms.
They should be forced to make that disclaimer on every single page of their website, because millions of people are deceived every day into thinking that open review platforms star ratings are accurate, when they're far from it.
If you don't agree with me, do a search for any of these companies on Trustpilot...
LG
Google
Costco
Home Depot
Under Armour
Fedex
Microsoft
Walmart
How is it that all of these beloved national brands have a 1 star?
It's because the only people leaving reviews are customers who had a bad experience and want to publicly express their frustrations.
But what about the millions of people that have good experiences with these companies every day? Don't their ratings and reviews matter? The only way to really know what these company's true reputation and average star ratings are, is to try and actively collect reviews from all of their clients after they buy. Only then can you get an accurate representation of their true reputation.
That's the difference between a verified review platform like Shopper Approved, and an open review platform like Trustpilot.
So, if you want to know which reviews you can trust, ignore any open review platforms, and stick with verified review platforms.
I hope that helps,
Sincerely,
Scott Brandley
