Although I didn’t get the answer and ‘fix’ I wanted, my expert suggested other sources, one of which provided the answer: there is no fix for my problem on a 5 year old Fitbit. Thank you for your honesty.

My expert was very helpful. I walked him through what was happening and it turns out that my vacuum is 15 years old ( one of the early pet vacuums) and it's probably coincidence that it started acting up now. And it has been well used! There appears to be a problem with the motor head. I will have it checked out, but expect to have to buy a new one. I'm grateful for his candidness.
