I had an issue with moving a prescription from a local pharmacy to Express Scripts. They weren’t the problem - my physician hadn’t submitted the requested info. They moved very quickly to get me my meds. I have four prescriptions with them and they arrive on time every quarter. They text me updates along the way.

Finally, an associate who really went above and beyond
Being a Type 1 diabetic is hard enough. Getting denied coverage and having to call Cigna, Express Scripts and Omada and spend an hour on the phone is the seventh circle of hell. BUT then I just happened to be connected with Shamar M. (based in Texas) at Express Scripts -- and he might be the most helpful associate I've ever worked with. He cared, he listened, he explained, he troubleshooted over and over again. My issue still isn't fully resolved but I can honestly say he went the extra mile and then some. So appreciated and such a pro. I haven't had great experiences with Express Script in the past, but I wanted to flag this one because he was exceptional.

Facts
TRICARE Pharmacy Program Leadership,
I am writing as a retired 22 year active- duty veteran and former civil servant with the Department of Veterans Affairs. Throughout my career, I witnessed firsthand how veterans relied on the VA pharmacy system because it consistently provided the most affordable and predictable medication costs. For decades, VA dispensed prescriptions were capped by law at eight dollars, later nine, and veterans trusted that their earned benefits ensured fair pricing.
Unfortunately, that is no longer the case under the current TRICARE/Express Scripts model.
I have repeatedly found that civilian pharmacies such as CVS, Walgreens, and Walmart — and even cash price discount programs — offer lower prices on certain medications than Express Scripts. This forces beneficiaries to “price match” their prescriptions every time a new medication is ordered. Instead of simply telling my physician to send prescriptions to Express Scripts, I now have to delay filling them while I compare prices across multiple pharmacies.
This is not the experience veterans expect from a benefit earned through decades of service.
Most TRICARE beneficiaries are unaware that Express Scripts may not offer the lowest price. They assume, as I once did, that their benefit guarantees the best value. In reality, many veterans are unknowingly overpaying for medications because they trust the system to act in their best interest.
This situation creates unnecessary delays in care, confusion for beneficiaries, and financial strain for those on fixed incomes. It also undermines confidence in the TRICARE Pharmacy Program.
I respectfully request that TRICARE leadership:
1. Review pricing disparities between Express Scripts and major civilian pharmacies.
2. Increase transparency so beneficiaries understand when lower-cost options exist.
3. Consider policy adjustments that ensure TRICARE prescriptions remain competitively priced.
4. Communicate clearly with beneficiaries about how to avoid overpaying for medications.
Veterans should not have to become pricing analysts to use the benefit they earned through service. I hope TRICARE will address this issue so beneficiaries can once again rely on their pharmacy benefit with confidence.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Respectfully,
Thomas Sonderegger

Excellent Service
I have used express scripts for years and they have been one of if not the absolute best companies I’ve ever dealt with. They are in constant communication with me, let me know when it’s time to reorder a med if not on automatic, let’s me know shipping info, even when it’s in my mailbox. They’ll contact my physician if a prescription needs to be renewed. I’ve even had a pharmacist call me directly if there’s an issue. Could not ask for a better relationship.

Express Scripts employees are not the…
Express Scripts employees are not the board members making decisions that harm patients. Fernanda, a customer service representative, is an excellent employee who deserves recognition for her work. She showed what strong customer service looks like—asking thoughtful questions like, “Can I help with that?”, “What do you need?”, “How about this?”, and “Let me check that for you.”
Fernanda connected me with a pharmacist who clearly explained the prior-authorization process for my medication. She also provided the phone number my prescribing physician needed and, most importantly, she listened.
While front-line employees can’t fix corporate-level decisions, the way Fernanda and the pharmacist handled my call made a difficult situation easier and kept it respectful. Thank you, Fernanda, and thank you to the pharmacist for your help—you were both awesome.
