I keep receiving emails between 2 different people at HireRight despite me telling them they have the wrong department. We are a higher education institute with 3000+ employees and because they are too lazy to do their own research to figure out which department to contact, they are sending me harassing emails. At one point they asked me who to contact. 1 - I have no idea and 2 - it's not my job to figure it out, it's theirs. So to this graduating student who has them doing an education verification request in OR, I apologize and urge you to use someone else. These people are incompetent.

HireRight is Incompetent!
I supplied every document and phone number that proves everything and still asked for more documents which I supplied, and my background check is still pending after three weeks and now I can’t start on the date I was supposed to. No contacting them as the phone number and chat is a doom loop that will have you on hold all day until you give up. If you’re applying for a job that uses HireRight, refuse and start looking for another position.

HireRight hell and back
Being subject to a HireRight background check as a freelancer in Europe feels like being stuck in Dante Alighieri’s vision of hell.
I had already been working freelance for a US company for over three years and they had made it very clear that they were very happy with my work. And so was I, until I received news of the HireRight background check.
Why it makes sense to run a background check on my education, my previous and current employments and such information three years in, I will never understand but down the rabbit hole I went ...
Filling in a profile with personal information, education history and employment history seemed straightforward and easy enough at first. Well, if it wasn't for the sub-standard UI. Once I uploaded the profile, it was gone with the wind and, instead, a button to upload documents showed up where I could upload random documents proactively to "facilitate the process". Fingers crossed someone would see the documents and be able to tie them back to a specific job in my profile and make sense of them!
And there I was, uploading documents over documents, converting files into jpegs (because that still seems to be a thing for this website), spending hours and hours and hours climbing into a time machine and digging up documents from 10 or more years ago—while I could have very well used this valuable time to do actual work for said company I was collaborating with. I provided them with so many documents and I frankly felt very uncomfortable disclosing all of this information to them.
Spoiler alert: the process did not go smoothly and I woke up to many HireRight requests for more information that were always generic automated messages that were vague and not at all constructive (Bots, anyone?). Even worse: the list of accepted documents that these bots erm people sent to me contained a list of US documents that do not exist in Europe. There also seemed to be a lack of understanding of how self-employment works as they kept insisting on work contracts and tax account testimonies which are not part of my life reality. There I was uploading invoices and bank statements that were good enough for German (!) authorities and institutions but not for a US background check provider that questioned my every move and made my life a living hell.
And do not think trying to reach their customer service via phone will get you anywhere because my phone calls never went through.
Long story short: terrible, de-humanizing experience, no service, US-centric, would not recommend!

This company should not even be in…
This company should not even be in business. They took more than thirty days to complete a background check and lost me a 250k job when I complained.
Total incompetence!

Information requested is intrussive and…
Information requested is intrussive and unecessary, Hireright not only requires documents they have no bussiness asking for, they are also not compliant to europes GDPR rules, and there are no guarantees of securing information in case of a data breach, all information are stored god knows where and there is 0 control over information provided from party that provides them, process is ridiculous overbureaucratized and inefficient as well as being a security risk for everyone who goes through it. The fact that potential employees are forced into this process as a requirement for employment is criminal. Nobody should be strongarmed into jeopardizeing his personal data in order to make a salary.

Hire Right is not the right company for background checks.
Thanks to HireRight I lost a great opportunity with a great company. They started my background check on May 3,2023 and as of June 27th,2023 it was still incomplete and HireRight never accepted responsibility they blamed the state of michigan.

I don't not feel comfortable with this…
I don't not feel comfortable with this company having so much of my personal information. Talk to your hr and tell them you don't want to go through hireright. It's your right, and your personal information.
I will take advantage of our federal law and request all my info removed from their system. You should too.
