Steve,
What a trainwreck! As a parent in a split home, I can tell you that it gets really bad when back and forth between kid and other parent and it's not working how I expect. So sorry to hear about the tense situation at home and what has to be immense frustration around this.
I dug into your experience with Customer Care over the past few days to see how things got resolved. What I can see is that your password situation worked in the end.
I'd love your suggestion on another way to do it if you see it. Since the phone belongs to the child and the parent controls it from a separate portal, it's essential for the child and parent not to use the same login. Otherwise, the child could end up controlling their own phone. We really feel we have to have these two separate logins, and built in error messages to let you know when you're using the wrong one by mistake.
As for wifi hotspot – this is a standard carrier issue with data phones. For example, even Verizon has this issue (https://community.verizon.com/t5/Apple-General/How-to-Disable-hotspot-on-a-child-s-iphone/td-p/1063400). Until carriers make "kid specific" plans, you'll have to find a plan that doesn't have a hotspot/tethering portion. Many of our customers have these plans because their kids use it for schooling.
The duplicates issue was an awful bug during our beta process! You were one of the ones hit by it (I was too... awful). But we found it, repaired it, and are on our way to better management of the caregiver portal.
So on the one hand, we'll still gladly fully refund you for these frustrations!! On the other, if you find value in the safelist, modes, curated apps, and so on, I'd ask you to consider giving us more time through this beta period.

Steven,
I'm sorry you feel duped. The only way to build software like this is to beta test it. Beta is mentioned in checkout several times, as well as a bold, large, italics statement on the home page that you can see before scrolling: "Pinwheel is currently in Public Beta!"
