Hi Theresa. We definitely understand it can be frustrating when a claim is not approved. Like most providers, we do not provide coverage for pre-existing conditions. This means that if something occurs, or was showing signs or symptoms prior to enrollment or during the waiting period, it would not be eligible for coverage. This includes conditions that are related to, secondary, or resultant from a pre-existing condition. Once a claim is filed, it is then processed by a Pumpkin claims team member, all of which have a veterinary medical background. Our claims team uses medical records and documentation provided by your veterinarian in order to determine coverage eligibility. Keep in mind that while we may not be able to offer coverage for pre-existing issues, new unrelated accidents or illnesses may be eligible for coverage
As with all pet insurance, our rates will increase from time-to-time. The rates for pet insurance are determined by factors such as breed, age, gender, species, and average veterinary costs over time. This ensures a fair and accurate calculation of your premium. For instance, certain breeds may be more susceptible to hereditary or congenital conditions, and the probability of medical problems increases with age.
Moreover, the geographic region also affects the cost of premiums. The average usage and expenses of veterinary care in the United States are considered, including veterinary inflation due to equipment improvements, medication, and other factors. Like home or auto insurance, your premiums are influenced by factors specific to your region (zip code), which could cause them to be higher or lower than those of your friends or family in different areas.
At this time any rates provided are the most competitive price available given current policy terms and are heavily regulated by your states Department of Insurance.
