As a first-time author and military spouse, my experience with RangeMe was disappointing and left me feeling like the platform is designed for larger brands with bigger budgets, not independent creators. I signed up because I was told by the Exchange that I needed to use RangeMe to inquire about having my book carried. What I didn’t understand at the time was that I would have to pay a substantial membership fee just to ask what should have been a simple question: whether they could stock a book that is already available through Ingram. The biggest frustration wasn’t just the cost—it was the lack of clarity. As a small author, I felt there was very little guidance about whether RangeMe was actually the right tool for my situation before paying for a membership. After signing up, I was told I needed to upgrade to a higher-tier plan in order to access meaningful customer support. Then I was informed that additional paid services would be needed to get more personalized assistance. At every step, the solution seemed to be spending more money. I don’t believe RangeMe is intentionally misleading people, and I can see how the platform may provide value for established brands actively pursuing retail distribution. However, for independent authors and very small businesses, the cost-to-value ratio can be extremely difficult to justify. My recommendation would be for RangeMe to provide clearer information upfront about who the platform is best suited for, what level of support is included at each membership tier, and whether there are simpler options for creators who only need to contact a specific retailer. Unfortunately, my experience left me feeling discouraged, confused, and out a significant amount of money without receiving the help I originally signed up for.
