Hi Jon,
We are so sad to see this review! Your experience matters very much to us.
I'm going to make sure I provide a really clear reply for you, as well as for our broader audience who may be interested to learn more about how our matching system works.
Today I was able to locate your profile on Adopted.com as we aren't receiving a reply from the email address you provided. I see that your use of our search tool was in fact many years ago, and that you haven't subscribed at all recently. I think it's likely you were using a different site more recently and have confused it with us, based on what you are describing (terminology that doesn't relate to our service), however I can take this as an opportunity to share some information about how we do matching!
I'll note that in your account with us (in your publicly visible profile) you don't have any close possible matches for your search. We don't use the term of a strong match that you noted in your review, so again I am considering you might be mixing up our service with another company, if you are having a more recent experience than the one you had on our site many years in the past.
The negative review you posted here was on Christmas day, and I did reply to you that same to day to the email address you provided to make sure you didn't have to wait, but I haven't been able to have a reply from you at all.
Regardless, I'm looking forward to explaining how the matches work, since this is the most important thing here!
Our members answer the same 10 questions about their adoption situation (birth parent, family member, or adoptee) and our system checks for matches among our 1.2 million profiles.
Rather than saying 'Yes' or 'No' in response to your querie, we show you the closest possible profiles to yours based on all factors.
This is one of the things that sets our service apart from others, the fact that we provide all of the close profiles for you to make a determination for yourself using a very smart system.
It is extremely common (in our 20 years of experience) that very often there is misinformation on at least one of the 10 factors we match on, on at least one side of the search. This means that if we show you who is close, you can browse through and tag which profiles are a good or poor lead based on your very unique situation. Additionally you can ask questions of the other party(ies) as you progress.
I hope that helps to understand more about what we do and why. You can always reach us by clicking Support on the bottom of any page of the site if you want support with your personal search - that's what we are here for!
I hope that soon we will be able to earn more stars from you Jon.
Regards and respect from the entire Adopted.com Team
